Seven hills, a tram that groans up one of them, Belém four kilometres downriver, and a fado room in Alfama after dark. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the city.
Tuk-tuk, tram 28, or your own legs
The tuk-tuks exist because Alfama is built at an angle no tram reaches. Two hours covers the viewpoints and the lanes behind the cathedral, and you finish somewhere with a view instead of at the bottom of a hill.
Belém, and what the money paid for
The monastery and the tower were built out of the pepper trade, four kilometres downriver from the centre. Entry is timed, the queue is real, and the custard tarts next door are the original recipe.
Where fado is actually sung
The small rooms in Alfama and Bairro Alto seat forty people and stop serving while the singing happens. Book the room, not the dinner package, unless you want to eat at nine.

Madeira and the Azores sit closer to Africa than to Lisbon.
Two flights out into the ocean, and both of them pay off. Madeira is levada walks, laurel forest and a coast that drops straight into deep water. São Miguel is crater lakes, hot springs and whales crossing in spring.

Porto is a granite city. The wine grows ninety minutes upriver.
The lodges at Gaia hold the Port, but the vines are on terraces above the river at Pinhão. A day trip does both, with two quintas, lunch and an hour on the water. The train runs the same line for a few euros if you would rather go alone.

What a day out in Portugal actually costs.

The Benagil Cave
The sea hollowed a dome out of the Algarve limestone and then opened a skylight in the top of it, so at the right hour a column of light lands on a beach no road reaches. Boats go inside when the swell allows and are not permitted to land; kayaks and paddleboards are the only way onto the sand. Mornings are calmer and the light comes in straighter.

The Initiation Well
At Quinta da Regaleira a spiral staircase drops nine storeys into the ground, mossed over and lit only from the opening above. It was cut at the turn of the last century for an owner with an interest in the Templars, and the garden runs on tunnels that surface at a grotto and a waterfall. Entry is timed and the first slot is the only quiet one.

Fado
Two guitars, one voice, and a song form that came out of the Lisbon docks in the nineteenth century and never left. The rule in a fado house is silence while it is being sung, which is why the food arrives first and the wine arrives early. Alfama and Bairro Alto keep the small rooms; Coimbra sings its own version, standing, in black capes.
